Mika's Grip

Mika's Arsenal

I remember growing up my grandfather use to say "meet life head on". Don't beat around the bushes looking for excuses, find out where you want to go then go as straight as you can to get there, don't let anything get in the way. I thought I knew what he was saying. But it wasn't until I got to know Mika that I really got a clear picture of what my Grandfather was talking about. In the sport of bowling there are so many things that can lead to confusion. Trying to be in the right part of the lane, using the right ball and staying ahead of transition. We hear it all the time... The heads hook, the backends are too tight, my ball doesn't read the mid-lane right. There are two ways to go about it...You can move around looking for what you want or you can meet it head on and learn to deal with something a little different.

Somehow Mika and my grandfather must be related. Because when I see how Mika attacks lane conditions and transition, I can hear and see my grandfather standing over me saying "You know where you want to be...Don't go around it...Get there, it is all up to you" An impressive lesson no matter who or how old you are.

I can remember when Mika came out on tour, I had the opportunity to spend some time with him and the most impressive thing I saw about his game was his mental approach. He knew where he wanted to be and you could tell he was creating a game plan to get there. Mika's game is built around a beautifully long and straight arm-swing and finished off with feel and touch through the hit zone. It is not an easy combination with as much swing momentum built in many of today's bowlers physical game. I guarantee you this was not learned on walled up house conditions.

I honestly think Mika and many other bowler's more challenging learning environments are a huge advantage in developing physical and mental tools needed to compete at the level of competition the PBA Tour provides. Mika has all the tools he needs to rev it up and hook it more than most at any level, why not? Because he has learned. Have you?
